Welcome to the memorial page for

Nell Philips Wilson

August 25, 1927 ~ April 14, 2017 (age 89)

Nell Philips Wilson, born on August 25, 1927, in Avon Park, Florida, passed away after a brief illness on April 14, 2017.

Nell attended Florida State College for Women. She subsequently worked at the University of Florida as a secretary in the Dean’s Office where a date with the Dean’s son led to a wonderful 67-year marriage to James B. (“Jim”) Wilson. Jim and Nell married on December 27, 1949. Through the course of their marriage, they lived in Ithaca and West Point, NY, and Gainesville, FL. They eventually settled in Raleigh and Cary, NC.

Nell was a wonderful homemaker, living out Proverbs 31. She was a supportive and loving wife to Jim, and a loving mother to their four children. Her love for family was only surpassed by her love of God. Nell loved Jesus, and served faithfully in many capacities in their home church, Westover United Methodist. Additionally, she worked with the Kairos Prison Ministry and the Shepherd’s Table Soup Kitchen well into her eighties.

Nell is predeceased by her husband, Jim, who passed away in November, 2016; and is survived by her children: Lois (Larry) Marshburn, Gary (Yuan-ling) Wilson, Mary (Tom) Ashburn, and Marcia (Todd) Caldwell. Additionally, she is survived by 13 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and one brother, Flournoy M. Philips.

Visitation will be from 10:00-10:45 on Saturday, May 6, at Westover United Methodist Church, Raleigh, NC, with memorial service following at 11:00. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Westover UMC. The family wishes to express their deepest appreciation to Dr. James S. Parsons and staff for their love and care.
